Ever since OpenOffice 2.0 Beta was released, i was hopping mad to try it!
But Gentoo made it sure that either OO-1.1.4 or OO-1.9.65, only one could remain on my system. The other one had to go!

& considering the fact that i could not let go of my "compiled" OO-1.1.4 (3 days of compilation!), OO-1.9.65 was making me go crazy!

& then... RPM came to my help!

emerge -v =app-arch/rpm-4.2

Hi,

Finally, i finished this bare-bones implementation on the THREAD'ed problem. You can find the tarball here.

Unzip it & follow whats inside README. This is my interpretation of the result...

//pthread_join(thread_1, NULL);

Since i dont allowed the threads to finish (as the problem didn't mentioned it), the value of "integer"...

//global variable
int integer=0;

...varies between 0 to 8. Most of the time, its zero as the "main" thread finishes before any of the children threads. If the first thread gets CPU, the value goes to 3 & in the best case, it goes to 8.

BUT, it does not goes beyond 8.

Despite looong compilation times, MakenToO will go on to be a part of my PC for quite some time & the reasons... galore!

1. Nothing beats "emerge". Its as awesome as apt-get (sometimes even better). The default package base is HUGE! Lotsa games too...

2. Package availability is faster. You dont need to be dependent on someone to make .des or .rpms for you! Plain tarballs are just, perfect!

3. Gentoo forums are faster (seemingly) than IRC help.

4. Gentoo's documentation is marvelous. You find each & every aspect of core-gentoo in gentoo docs.

5. Its amazingly flexible. Create your own ebuilds from the older ones or just emerge as many packages (simultaneously) you want...

6 ... or just go & emerge "rpm & dpkg" for you & you can directly install rpms & debs using "rpm -ivh" or "dpkg -i". The system is built to support just... anything!

7. NOT TO MENTION SPEED & STABILITY !!!

8. Installing gentoo is like watching your own child grow! From its birth to its teens to... & it still remains in its teens, always fast & active!

9. Just installing gentoo, teaches you a lot of stuff. Forget what will happen if you actually use it!

10. Using Gentoo takes you nearer to the roots of Linux... the source! You may never even think of using or even looking at source of apps you download as debs or rpms. But with gentoo, you might, as its the only thing you (generally) will download!

11. Using gentoo, just doubles the "Nerd" factor!

All this might seem as a piece of crap... Until you try Gentoo yourself!
Probably these were few reasons (among many more), that i junked SuSE 9.3 for MakenToO!

5 days on SuSE & i'm back...

Just 5/6 dayas on SuSE & i realized that nothing can beat gentoo!

Specially when it comes to stability, speed & package management. Novell can release as many updates & patches for SuSE as they want, set up as many ftp servers, but still, they will never be able to get past apt-get's efficiency, which in turn will always remain behind Gentoo's emerge!

That said, this post obviously comes from Gentoo :-D

Sincerely speaking... Its a great distro, aptly complemented with the large rpm-base thats present on the cd's. Its almost impossible that you need a package & its already not there on the installation media (though the versions may differ).
YaST is a great tool, doing almost everything for you. From online updates to device mgmt to services mgmt, everything! Gnome 2.10 is fantastic, almost all nagging problems of 2.8 version are solved. Mono apps like Beagle, FSpot, Blam are making life quite easier.
SuSE 9.3 is almost as fast as my Gentoo (sometimes even faster).

BUT, i do miss my emerge/apt-get. SuSE has to do some real work on this regard. I cannot happily live with Gaim 1.1.4 when i know that Gaim 1.2.1 is already running on my Gentoo!

All in all, i'll rate this distro 8.5/10 on looks, 8.5 on speed but 6-6.5/10 on updates & stuff!

This 0.0.1 (release candidate) is in development state.
The current version just comes up asking for you to enter something. You will have to start it everytime by itself or cook up a good start script.

If you think that all this time i was just "bragging" about closed-source data & MS Office... you were damm wrong!

It happned that i edited my resume in college using MS Office Word 2003. It generated such a format that neither Open Office 1.1.4 nor MS Office 2000 was able to open it. I ultimately had to send my resume in an ASCII format to the consultancy!

What a shame...
Leave apart OpenOffice team (as they are cracking MS's document formats on their own), NOT EVEN MS WORD 2000 was able to open that file! What a shame for MS!

I think, its high time to make these formats "public".

Being a part of the Linux community DOES matters alot.
People here are always willing to help & share. Unexpected people come up with some great help. I have a similar experience to share...

I was trying to send my Resume to Novell India, but everytime i sent it, it used to bounce back with some automated reply, which in-turn referred me the to same email ID. Hence, i put up a request at ILUGD mailing list.

What happened next was truly amazing. Someone (Mr Shankarsan) completely unknown to me, forwarded my mail to the right person (Mr Munish, working with Novell India), without any personal motive. Now i'm in direct contact with Mr Munish for the same purpose.

I, heartly thank Mr Shankarsan & Mr Munish.
It may not matter, whatever the end result be (i get a call from Novell or not).

oh! forgot to mention...
It will be a dream come true to work with Novell India.

I'm falling in love yet again!
Since I'm upgrading to KDE 3.4, i'm using Gnome these days & ... it feels soo "Non-Windows-Like" & "appealing" that i just cant wait to emerge Gnome 2.10.
Also i'm dying to try the new KDE 3.4 which *might* be emerged by tomorrow afternoon.

I wished i could use both of these together (usefully)...
BUT, i'll have to settle with one at a time...

Open Source Panipat

Welcome back :-)
Here I'm, spending 3 full days at Panipat, almost fighting the "4th war of Panipat" :-D
Well, it was a war against "closed-source-software", a war against "proprietary software", a war for the GNU movement!

The stay was at Manuj's place & aunti-ji used to cook some realy lip-smacking meals. The NFL colony (where i stayed) is like a town in itself. 80% of NFL people knew Manuj. He's quite popular over there ;-)

Up on agenda were two presentations, one for NC College of Engg & the other for Asia Pacific Inst. of Engg & both went absolutely great.

The staff @ NC college is the "most helpfull staff" i have ever seen. The helped us alot during our presentation. Students at NC were cool, with some of the brightest minds.

Atmosphere at APIIT was amazing. Though campus placements were on, but the zest in students for the presentation was no less! The faculty was equally interested in Linux & open-source.

The presentations went so good that i'm confident that if 250 students (in all) attended the presentations, 80% will give it "atleast" a thought & 50-60% will try open-source software either at home ot at college.

This trip was a bit different than others. Neither was i paid for the presentations, nor did i got any contract from these colleges, but still, i feel damm happy.

You can say... "its my way of contributing back to the community to which i belong!"

Okay, Okay, The "Opera 8 beta" thing looks cool, is damm faster, scrolls better than firefox, starts quicker than FF, tab mgmt is alot better & its L&F gels better with my KDE theme... but stil cannot beat firefox on three "basic" issues!

1. Its not free! These text adds are bugging me!!!
2. It still dosnt supports Gmail's https/python duet, yahoo's "dynamic add-bcc" thing, blogger's non-html version. It dosnt comes with Flash pre-packed, FF bookmark importer... the list is endless!

3. I miss my FF plugins, specially the "auto-copy" plugin.

On a rating of 1-10 (float), i'll give it 6.50

WTF!
How do i get current image size of my image on a web-page in opera???
Why dosnt this preview button works???

...& most of the times, this weakest link is an idiot network admin.

Without even breaking into any server, without sniffing anything, without trying any dictionary/brute-force attack, ***SomeOne*** got into a n/w, went through all the user-names/passwords, n/w policies, admin accts, everything... just because an idiotic "admin", had dumped his mysql database into a "world-readable" directory under his apache document-root, which nikto very easily detected!

What a "super Idiot admin"!!!

From past 2 days, i'm banging my head against docs for qmail to get it running on gentoo. Qmail's docs are good, infact wonderfull, but being on a non-legacy system, i need to be extra-extra carefull. I cannot afford to make mistakes as every mistake can set me back by atleast 2 hours of re-compilation. Hence, golden words for me are : "Learn from other's mistakes" :-D

Anyways, i WILL set up Qmail this week & give my family members their own address, like :

As always... Linux Asia started with a "wicked" goofup!

Windows XP in the first (inaugural) keynote!!!
What a shame!
Mr. Rahul, the editor of LFY was literally hiding his face :-D Being seated just next to him, i missed one of the best shots my camera could have catured! Obviously enough, it was replaced soon after.

But hey! Thanks to XP, things started off with a good mood. Welcome note (quite long) by Dr. Deepak from IIT Mumbai was excellent.

Other keynotes/Q&A sessions also were interesting. Specially the Panel discussion on "Is Linux ready for the Desktops?"... oh, BTW, I plan to write an article on same for "xxx" :-)

All in all, 1st day at LA '05 was quite interesting.

One major-major thing that happened today... was that it shifted my mindset from a "JOB" to my own business... When I'm good enough, why can't i exploit my skills for my own company? When I have a good business model, when I have a targetted segment, I think, its worth a risk!

It was quite a frustrating experience back in the days of RedHat. Downloading each & every rpm manually, installing it, solving dependencies myself... why d heck do i need to use Linux, if i cant automate these things???
Ok, yum was around the corner... but in beta/gama stages, quite broken at times... alot frustrating!

To automate this package installation, i decided to move onto Debian. Its "apt-get" is amazing. 5-6 months down the line, i find it very easy to use (99 times out of 100). But still, some dependencies creep in, urge to get the latest packages remains, which are still not added to debian repositories & the SPEED... still lacks!

In came Gentoo!!!
Rock solid, automated installers, repositories as wast as "open source" & above all, upto 20% faster than my debian on my existing hardware!

I think, its time to move on...

Exceptions creating Exceptional Problems!

Hello,

Exception handling is cool, but can be a pain in the... donkey sometimes!
LinSock++ is just inches away from being finished, what remains is just error handling. This is what troubling us from past 5 days...

If i create a TCP socket, which fails to connect, the user might want to connect after a timeout in the catch block, or call a function from there to do it. But when control reaches the catch block, the "object" is either destroyed or yet not created (behaviour of C++ exceptions) & hence the user is stuck!

In a nutshell, accessing the object in which exception occured is not being possible in catch block.

How to overcome this problem?
Any other solutions... workarounds...

Yes, sometimes the technology becomes so fascinating!

I had these C++ classes with me, for which i had to generate Class Diagrams. After working at a streach for 5-6 hours, designing/re-designing/debugging the classes, i had absolutely no energy left to make these diagrams by hand.

...in came Dia & autodia.pl (amazing piece of software)!!!

All i had to do was "autodia.pl -l C++ -d ./" in my source directory & it generated an XML formatted class diagram, readable by Dia. & in no time the following class diagram was made... Click Here

& all this couldn't have been possible if i wouldn't have been working on Linux...

Problem
--------
We all know that those files recieved via bluetooth in Nokia6600 (series 60) phones can :-

1. neither be forwarded via bluetooth
2. nor can be saved to other locations in the MMC.

Solution
---------
The solutions which seemed very tricky in the begening, came out to be a "low dud", all you need is some right tools (all freeware) & some POM (Presence Of Mind)

Tools
-----
1. FExplorer -- http://users.skynet.be/domi/fexplorer.htm -- (freeware)
2. Forwarder -- http://www.compsoc.man.ac.uk/~ashley -- (freeware)
3. Bluetooth connection or any other means to transfer these onto your mobile.

Steps
-----
1. Install FExplorer & Forwarder
2. Recieve something via bluetooth so that it goes to your inbox
3. Check that you are not able to transfer it further as you dont get any option to send it via bluetooth or move it to a suitable gallery/folder in ur MMC

THE FUN PART

4. Run Forwarder and forward sis/mp3 files to another bluetooth device! (Problem (1) solved)
5. Click options > file properties
6. Try remembering the path it shows!
7. Close Forwarder & open FExplorer
8. Goto the path specified in step (6)
9. Cut & copy the mp3/sis file to any folder you like (even your gallery) (Problem (2) solved)
10. You can even send these files via Bluetooth as FExplorer supports bluetooth!

CAUTION
--------
The inbuilt gallery manager (The Gallery in simple terms) will not show you the .sis & .mp3 extension files. So to send them via Bluetooth from "the gallery", rename them to any other extension. OR use FExplorer's bluetooth!

Nokia & Symbian made great efforts to hide these formats, preventing the people from sending these files via Bluetooth/Infrared... but remember... Nothing's Mission Impossible!!!

TIP
---
Make a permanent directory in your MMC & keep atleast these two installers (forwarder & fexplorer) files, so that you can always forward them & this knowledgebase to your friends!

I had all the time to go & get my Moku, no-one was willing to get me one. I could have spent hours & hours fiddling with it, recording things, syncing it with my PC, testing its Blue-tooth connectivity, frying my friends with jelousy... capturing "piddi" in a yet smaller "piddi" would have been so much fun!

I dont have even seconds to "scratch-my-head", the course content is just piling up like files in an MCD office, pressure is at peak, tension is high, wind is cold & above all my throat is so damm sour! AND now everybody is willing to get me my Moku... So IRONIC!!!

Anyways, i'm playing it safe... have decided to get it after tomorrow's exam, so that i can peacefully finish with my "Control Systems" exam (A BIG DINOSOUR). A CELL delayed can cause me no harm, but anything less than 50 in Controls *will* put back my career by "atleast" 6 months!

So... hoping, that DINOSOUR gets past my 3 hour exam without any tranqualizers :-D

Good Work!

Almost everything works out of the box in this Linux. MP3/AVI/MPEG/RM/WMA/DAT, all file formats are supported. Has some preloaded stunning themes (xmms/kde) and is DEB based, so whatever it dosn't has can be apt-get in seconds (amazing piece of work by Debian guys!)

Though it has some libraries missing... but hey! you cant get everything in a 480 megs ISO :)

So "apt-get install missing" is an *apt* solution **grin**

I have decided to not go for MAJOR Linux distros (fedora/mandrake) in future. They, in order to cater large masses often miss out on latest (though unstable/testing) & day-2-day packages. BUT these kinda distros (Kalango Linux) proove much more focussed & updated!

So? any takers for this brazillian Linux...

MAN!!!

The only BAD thing I about about Linux is that the moment you feel you are really up-to-date with Linux world... you actually fall behind 2 steps!
Just 2 days back, i installed "Kalango Linux" (kde3.3.1, gnome2.8.1) & was very excited to be a top-notch UPDATED Linux user (hehe). But today, while surfing kde-look, i read about KDE 3.4 (and KDE 4), which made me feel really really OUTDATED!!!

KDE 3.3.2 was tagged today, so we should see a new bug fix release of KDE in the first or second week of December. Earlier this past week, the plans for a KDE 3.4 release were also finalized. This will be the last major KDE 3 release before KDE 4. KDE 4 will make use of the Qt 4 library which promises to be quite a revolution for KDE and all Qt applications, but will break binary compatibility with previous releases....

Hi there!

As always, i'm planning a cell phone, against my parents wishes! They still think of it as a luxury, rather than a necessity.

I could do alot with a camera/video cell. You could find more lively pictures/videos here. We also never made a family album of ours. Whatever pics we have are either too ancient (even for me to recognise myself) or non-existant! I even want to do that. BUT still, thats a luxury for them, not a necessity! Can u imagine, no pic of piddi/snoopy!

I'm getting sick of my "plane-jane simple" Nokia 2100. I cant play around with it, cant go Wi-Fi with it, still have to live in that old "Shwet-Shyam" 5 line display, those old ring tones (no mp3/polyphonic stuff)!!!

The moment i'll get that 14-15k mark in my piggy-bank, i'll definately get one good cell!

Nirulas SUCK a Big time!!!

Hey!

Tonight, I went to Nirulas to have a ligh snack & I must tell you, Nirulas SUCK a big time, atleast the one where we went!!!

The person manning cash counter was a newbie (i wonder how such a big food chain employs such newbies for manning the cash counter). He was taking ages to finalize the orders!

The waiting time was... phew! a loooong time!

& finally, when we got our Burgers, Coke & French fries, they sucked too! Burgers were nothing but a bunch of bread loafs stuffed with potato, none of which were fried well. The french fries, which seemed to be atleast fried properly, were tasteless, without any salt! Not to mention the amount of French Fries... just for name... ha!

Coke was not chilled! & it was minus "fizz"!

I wonder if I will ever go to Nirulas again!

Happy Diwali folks!

Ever wondered, why we Jains celebrate Diwali...
No! Its not because of homecoming of God RAM but some other reason!

Well... This day, back in history, Lord Mahawir Swami ji got "Kewal Gyan", ie, the knowledge of all three dimensions - Past, Present & Future. The very next day, his deciple, Lord Gautam Prabhu ji also got "Kewal Gyan".

Hence we Jains, celebrate this day by lighting diyas/candles & pray GOD to shower prosperity & happiness on us.

& yes, BTW, this gives us no reason to harm our Mother Nature by bursting crackers & polluting the environment!

So! Light up the day & be happy!
Happy Diwali to all!

PS: This day, we have khichdi as our dinner! The reason being that all day long we eat all sorts of junk food, & hence the Dinner should make up for the all the protiens lost during the day :-D

After 2 hours of fiddling with BASH, i made this small script that sends 'n' number of SMS's to any (hopefully) network in India (atleast Hutch), that allows recieving SMS from WWW.

Happy Diwali !!!

This time, i dont know how, but have a strange positive feeling towards bursting crackers. BUT, i know, i will not.

Anyways... dad/samu are gone to choose a new car (Opel Corsa maybe) black color, elite model. Budget is 5L & they'll surely book it today. BUT, i've decided not to sit in it! not even once! ...well, i have my own reasons (mobile/lappy...)

& ya, my Firefoz (PR) is giving me a lot of troubles, so i may decide to switch/download-newer-version... or maybe do a switchover completely!

Went for an interview today!

Hey there!

After all these days, after waiting for a single chance to get interviewed! finally, today i got that chance!

Interview went superb & i'm on a verge of getting a job! My US interview (telephonic) may be scheduled sometime in next week!

But have some doubts about this job... Its a job that a bit "hat-ke" from usual coding ones. Its kinda troubleshooting some remote servers/setups, providing remote assistance to US customers. I'm just doubting about the future as i have to sign a bond for 18 months. Its a long time!

Should i bet my career on it....

Well! The job is totally Linux based, Good $$, Delhi based...
