Firefox is not faster than Internet Explorer, except for scripting, but for standards support, security and features, it is a better choice. However, it is still not as fast as Opera, and Opera also offers a high level of standards support, security and features.

On Linux, Konqueror is the fastest for starting and viewing basic pages on KDE, but as soon as script or images are involved, or you want to use the back or forward buttons, or if you use Gnome, Opera is a faster choice, even though on KDE it will take a few seconds longer to start. Mozilla and Firefox give an overall good performance, but their script, cache handling and image-based page speed still cannot compare with Opera.

On Mac OS X, Opera and Safari are both very fast, with Safari 2 being faster at starting and rendering CSS, but with Opera still being distinguishably faster for rendering tables, scripting and history (especially compared with the much slower Safari 1.2). Camino is fast to start, but then it joins its sisters Mozilla and Firefox further down the list. Neither Mozilla, Firefox nor IE perform very well on Mac, being generally slower than on other operating systems.

On Mac OS 9, no single browser stands out as the fastest. In fact, my condolences to anyone who has to use one of them, they all perform badly.
Fantastic Doggy!

Have a look @ this...

This is a normal/everyday thing. Nothing beats "emerge". Its as awesome as apt-get (sometimes even better). The default package base is HUGE! Lotsa games too...

2. Package availability is faster. You dont need to be dependent on someone to make .des or .rpms for you! Plain tarballs are just, perfect!

3. Gentoo forums are faster (seemingly) than IRC help.

4. Gentoo's documentation is marvelous. You find each & every aspect of core-gentoo in gentoo docs.

5. Its amazingly flexible. Create your own ebuilds from the older ones or just emerge as many packages (simultaneously) you want...

6 ... or just go & emerge "rpm & dpkg" for you & you can directly install rpms & debs using "rpm -ivh" or "dpkg -i". The system is built to support just... anything!

7. NOT TO MENTION SPEED & STABILITY !!!

8. Installing gentoo is like watching your own child grow! From its birth to its teens to... & it still remains in its teens, always fast & active!

9. Just installing gentoo, teaches you a lot of stuff. Forget what will happen if you actually use it!

10. Using Gentoo takes you nearer to the roots of Linux... the source! You may never even think of using or even looking at source of apps you download as debs or rpms. But with gentoo, you might, as its the only thing you (generally) will download!

---Most Important---
11. Using gentoo, just doubles the "Nerd" factor!
---Most Important---

All this might seem as a piece of crap... Until you try Gentoo yourself!
Probably these were few reasons (among many more), that i junked SuSE 9.3 for MakenToO!

Thanking Vishal, who encouraged me to use Gentoo...

--makuchaku
(In front of my MakenToO)

This will THREAD your brains

An interesting question...

Consider a function PlusPlus()

static int i;

void PlusPlus()
{
i++;
}

Now 2 threads are created...

THREAD 1
PlusPlus();
PlusPlus();
PlusPlus();

THREAD 2
PlusPlus();
PlusPlus();
PlusPlus();
PlusPlus();
PlusPlus();

Assuming that all necessary work is done to set up these threads & PlusPlus function, what will be the MAX & MIN value of "i" after the threads stop executing. Its a great distro, aptly complemented with the large rpm-base thats present on the cd's. Its almost impossible that you need a package & its already not there on the installation media (though the versions may differ).
YaST is a great tool, doing almost everything for you. From online updates to device mgmt to services mgmt, everything! Gnome 2.10 is fantastic, almost all nagging problems of 2.8 version are solved. Mono apps like Beagle, FSpot, Blam are making life quite easier.
SuSE 9.3 is almost as fast as my Gentoo (sometimes even faster).

BUT, i do miss my emerge/apt-get. SuSE has to do some real work on this regard. I cannot happily live with Gaim 1.1.4 when i know that Gaim 1.2.1 is already running on my Gentoo!

All in all, i'll rate this distro 8.5/10 on looks, 8.5 on speed but 6-6.5/10 on updates & stuff!

...more next time,
makuchaku (SuSE'd)

Distribute it...

cat /mnt/cdrom/media.1/info.txt

---snip---

RIGHTS AND LICENSES

This Novell Software License Agreement ("Agreement") is a legal
agreement between You (an entity or a person) and Novell, Inc.
("Novell") with respect to the software product identified in the
title of this Agreement, media (if any) and accompanying documentation
(collectively the "Software").

The Software is a collective work of Novell. Unexpected people come up with some great help. I have a similar experience to share...

I was trying to send my Resume to Novell India, but everytime i sent it, it used to bounce back with some automated reply, which in-turn referred me the to same email ID. Hence, i put up a request at ILUGD mailing list.

What happened next was truly amazing. Someone (Mr Shankarsan) completely unknown to me, forwarded my mail to the right person (Mr Munish, working with Novell India), without any personal motive. Now i'm in direct contact with Mr Munish for the same purpose.

I, heartly thank Mr Shankarsan & Mr Munish.
It may not matter, whatever the end result be (i get a call from Novell or not).

oh! forgot to mention...
It will be a dream come true to work with Novell India.
...keeping my fingers crossed X

Uptime

My Personal Best!

top - 02:29:53 up 3 days, 19:42,  4 users,  load average: 0.81, 0.62, 0.90

Ghosh!
My mom will kill me over electricity bills!

Minority Report

Imagining a world free of crime?
Imagining PreCops protecting you?
Imagining yourself to be Tom Cruise?

Well... take a back seat & relax!
If these things seem to be sci-fi exaggerations, something else may be a reality in not very distant future!

Remember the way, people were using computers in Minority Report? But how does the practice actually work? Joe Beda provides a helpful insight in his blog, pointing out other interesting software development practices at Google. The code database is open for everyone, the snippets and pieces are documented and one is encouraged to re-use existing code. The intranet is transparent to the max and the company accepts the fact that there's more than way to accomplish something, so a better method is always welcomed. Interesting to note that just like Hawaiian shirt days in Office Space, the 20% per projects are "actively encouraged" - Joe suspects his review ratings might slip if he doesn't have one soon."

...more @

http://www.eightypercent.net/Archive/2005/03/24.html

Lets Share!
If your ISP is as obnoxious as ours and refusing to open/forward a couple of ports for FTP/SSH so that you can transfer/recevive files from your work, then you need GAINT. type='text'>Microsoft to Release New Internet Browser

Feb 15, 2005 — SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters)
Microsoft Corp. will release a new version of Internet Explorer, the world's most popular Internet browsing software, with new, built-in security features, Chairman Bill Gates said on Tuesday.

In a speech at a major security conference here, Gates said Internet Explorer 7.0, with new anti-spyware features, will be released for preliminary testing this summer.

The move comes three years after Microsoft, the world's biggest software company, launched a major initiative to improve the reliability and security of its software, which runs on about 90 percent of all personal computers.

Welcome to LA '05

As always... Linux Asia started with a "wicked" goofup!

Windows XP in the first (inaugural) keynote!!!
What a shame!
Mr. Rahul, the editor of LFY was literally hiding his face :-D Being seated just next to him, i missed one of the best shots my camera could have catured! Obviously enough, it was replaced soon after.

But hey! Thanks to XP, things started off with a good mood. Welcome note (quite long) by Dr. Deepak from IIT Mumbai was excellent.

Other keynotes/Q&A sessions also were interesting. Specially the Panel discussion on "Is Linux ready for the Desktops?"... oh, BTW, I plan to write an article on same for "xxx" :-)

All in all, 1st day at LA '05 was quite interesting.

One major-major thing that happened today... was that it shifted my mindset from a "JOB" to my own business... When I'm good enough, why can't i exploit my skills for my own company? When I have a good business model, when I have a targetted segment, I think, its worth a risk!

--
makuchaku

up next... Then, the access to the remote files will be completely network transparent. In other words, you'll be able to read/modify remote files as if they were local, watch movies/listen to MP3s from FTP/SSH/Gnutella servers without copying them locally. Sheer magic. Now skip to the next section.

OK, it's time to fasten your seatbelt and hold your breath: Kansas is going bye-bye 'cause you're about to swallow the red pill.

Forget everything you knew about file sharing clients. This is a glimpse of the future...

You mount a gnetfs in ~/gnet. You wait a couple of minutes so it can establish its peer connections. You start a search by creating a subdirectory of SEARCH: mkdir “~/gnet/SEARCH/metallica mp3”. You wait a few seconds for the results to accumulate. The you chdir to “SEARCH/metallica mp3” and try a ls: surprise – the files are there! You shoot up mpg123 and enjoy... Downloading each & every rpm manually, installing it, solving dependencies myself... why d heck do i need to use Linux, if i cant automate these things???
Ok, yum was around the corner... but in beta/gama stages, quite broken at times... alot frustrating!

To automate this package installation, i decided to move onto Debian. Its "apt-get" is amazing. 5-6 months down the line, i find it very easy to use (99 times out of 100). But still, some dependencies creep in, urge to get the latest packages remains, which are still not added to debian repositories & the SPEED... still lacks!

In came Gentoo!!!
Rock solid, automated installers, repositories as wast as "open source" & above all, upto 20% faster than my debian on my existing hardware!

I think, its time to move on...

signing off...
makentoo!

Hacking Firefox... This is what troubling us from past 5 days...

//Socket class

class Socket
{
Socket()
{
if(error_on_doing_something())
{
throw SockException("ErrMessage", code);
}
}

do_something_else()
{
if(error_on_doing_something())
{
throw SockException("ErrMessage", code);
}
}
};

//Main program

#include<...>
void main()
{
try
{
Socket object();
object.do_something_else();
}catch(SockException err)
{
err.getCode();     //works
err.getMessage();  //works
//object.cannot_access_this();  <----- this is troublesome!
}
}

Now consider this,
If i create a TCP socket, which fails to connect, the user might want to connect after a timeout in the catch block, or call a function from there to do it. But when control reaches the catch block, the "object" is either destroyed or yet not created (behaviour of C++ exceptions) & hence the user is stuck!

In a nutshell, accessing the object in which exception occured is not being possible in catch block.

How to overcome this problem?
Any other solutions... workarounds...

All comments/flames/suggestions are welcome.

cya,
makuchaku

Long time no see!

maku: Hi Blog!
blog: Hey maku... long time no see!
maku: yup yaar, exams/projects/tensions/more-tensions... :-D
maku: now evrythings fine... exams finito!
blog: chalo, dats nice
maku: yaa
blog: Aur? whats up these days?
maku: hmm... FExplorer -- http://users.skynet.be/domi/fexplorer.htm  --  (freeware)
2. Forwarder -- http://www.compsoc.man.ac.uk/~ashley  --  (freeware)
3. Bluetooth connection or any other means to transfer these onto your mobile.

Steps
-----
1. Install FExplorer & Forwarder
2. Recieve something via bluetooth so that it goes to your inbox
3. Check that you are not able to transfer it further as you dont get any option to send it via bluetooth or move it to a suitable gallery/folder in ur MMC

THE FUN PART

4. Run Forwarder and forward sis/mp3 files to another bluetooth device! (Problem (1) solved)
5. Click options > file properties
6. Try remembering the path it shows!
7. Close Forwarder & open FExplorer
8. Goto the path specified in step (6)
9. Cut & copy the mp3/sis file to any folder you like (even your gallery) (Problem (2) solved)
10. You can even send these files via Bluetooth as FExplorer supports bluetooth!

CAUTION
--------
The inbuilt gallery manager (The Gallery in simple terms) will not show you the .sis & .mp3 extension files. So to send them via Bluetooth from "the gallery", rename them to any other extension. OR use FExplorer's bluetooth!

Nokia & Symbian made great efforts to hide these formats, preventing the people from sending these files via Bluetooth/Infrared... but remember... Nothing's Mission Impossible!!!

TIP
---
Make a permanent directory in your MMC & keep atleast these two installers (forwarder & fexplorer) files, so that you can always forward them & this knowledgebase to your friends!

makuchaku

God bless Bluetooth!

Its just so amazing...
...a piece of cake...

have your cake & eat it too!!!
makuchaku

Linux is Ultimate!!!

It took me just 15 minutes to configure a bluetooth connection on Linux!!! BUT these kinda distros (Kalango Linux) proove much more focussed & updated!

So? any takers for this brazillian Linux...
gimme a buzz...

cyao!

God Bless Yahoooo!

Today yahoo gave me 250 mb!!!
All i can say is... But today, while surfing kde-look, i read about KDE 3.4 (and KDE 4), which made me feel really really OUTDATED!!!

OSdir.com says...
KDE 3.3.2 was tagged today, so we should see a new bug fix release of KDE in the first or second week of December. Earlier this past week, the plans for a KDE 3.4 release were also finalized. This will be the last major KDE 3 release before KDE 4. KDE 4 will make use of the Qt 4 library which promises to be quite a revolution for KDE and all Qt applications, but will break binary compatibility with previous releases....
Preview of KDE 3.4 / KDE

So until i can "apt-get kde4", i'll have to remain happy with Kde3.3.1...

makuchaku
Kde 3.4 features

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makuchaku.blogspot.com/2004/12/ghosh-im-already-feeling-outdated.html' title='Ghosh! The following describes the simplest way to Bluejack:

(1). Enable Bluetooth on your phone
(2). Name your phone so the person you bluejack knows who it is. Of course it can be anonymous or an unrelated name to yours if you prefer.
(3). Locate yourself in a place where other enabled device can be found. Interestingly this can include the tube as Bluetooth does not rely on network signals
(4). Create a new contact in your phone or PDA. Rather than writing a name in the name field type your message.
(5). Save the new contact (message)
(6). Select send via Bluetooth from the appropriate menu
(7). The phone/PDA/PC will search for enabled devices.
(8). A list of names will appear if you are in the vicinity of other enabled devices.
(9). Choose a name and send. It’s as simple as that!

cyao!

BlueJacking... He couldn't understand what was happening to him and was looking around all over the place for his bluejacker! We went up and down, around in circles, dodging his stare; quite literally, up in lifts, down on escalators!

He was talking with his wife (who also had her Nokia out), trying to work out how this ingenious trick had been played on him. The pair were asking around in the shopping centre, and even spoke to a security guard; we got a tad worried at this point! Up and down the streets we roamed when we finally could follow no more, when he walked off to his car.

It was a massive laugh and he was the perfect victim! I would definitely recommend bluejacking for a great day out!"
---

Whoa!!!
I've started BlueJacking even when i'm dying to lay my hands on my "Moku"... & u...?

makuchaku
BlueJack or get BlueJacked!!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://makuchaku.blogspot.com/2004/11/bluejacking-hacking-via-bluetooth.html' title='BlueJacking... They still think of it as a luxury, rather than a necessity.

I could do alot with a camera/video cell. You could find more lively pictures/videos here. We also never made a family album of ours. Whatever pics we have are either too ancient (even for me to recognise myself) or non-existant! I even want to do that. BUT still, thats a luxury for them, not a necessity! Can u imagine, no pic of piddi/snoopy!

I'm getting sick of my "plane-jane simple" Nokia 2100. Its not because of homecoming of God RAM but some other reason!

Well... This day, back in history, Lord Mahawir Swami ji got "Kewal Gyan", ie, the knowledge of all three dimensions - Past, Present & Future. The very next day, his deciple, Lord Gautam Prabhu ji also got "Kewal Gyan".

Hence we Jains, celebrate this day by lighting diyas/candles & pray GOD to shower prosperity & happiness on us.

& yes, BTW, this gives us no reason to harm our Mother Nature by bursting crackers & polluting the environment!

So! Light up the day & be happy!
Happy Diwali to all!

PS: This day, we have khichdi as our dinner!
